December 2005

Currently researching how to convert all the old SCCS projects to CVS. Gary H. has already blazed a trail in that direction, and is being a considerable help. I’ll be a much happier coder once this is complete.

Mmmm… forbidden doughnut…

I just accidentally keyed “homer” (I meant to type “home”) into my Windows XP Run menu, and it took me to http://www.thesimpsons.com/. Did I just find an easter egg?

Progress screenshot from my new simulation/game. This one was taken before the bug was introduced, so the zyps are following the target properly.

Progress screenshot from my new simulation/game. Here you see a variety of “creatures” of varying color and transparency. Currently they are supposed to be chasing the white target, which is controlled by my mouse. Thanks to a newly-introduced bug, however, they are completely ignoring it.

Grrrraaaaggghhh!

I’ve already plowed through the source for 3 different programs, trying to follow the flow of data for a single process. I’m not even sure where the trail ends. All of these things are dependent on each other, and before I run any of them, I have to be sure there won’t be any adverse side effects. Is this what I face for the next year?!

Go back to your very first post of each month during 2005…

…copy the first sentence of each post you made and post that in a new thread in your LJ. (Taken from .)

Here’s another interesting unintended use for Google… Just grabbed new albums from Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, and The Prodigy, and I have to say I’m really disappointed. I had set up a Technorati blog search for “raskin”, to keep me alerted to posts on the exploits of Jef Raskin, user interface guru and my personal idol. SNES game music is back in my playlist. Seeing the Vogons and their triplicate authorization forms in the Hitchhiker’s Guide last week has me keenly aware of the bureaucracy within my own company. Someone had left a copy of Soul Calibur II on the shelf in front of me at Target, and I finally decided to stop stalling. My old project manager just reminded me that the new Halo 2 maps are out tonight. There’s a travel freeze and a hiring freeze (despite the fact that our department is severely understaffed). Diana, originally uploaded by nephariuz. First I was laid up for a week with strep throat. Reasons I like my new employer: Caution: may cause stupidity.

*corrected

I just realized that my previous post mentions NyQuil, and the one before that mentions DayQuil.

I’m spending a lot of the time sick, aren’t I? I suppose I should start sleeping occasionally. Kind of hard with Lenny barging into the room at random times of the night, though.

From the e-mail I sent my family last night…

> Diana’s surgery to remove her gall bladder was today. They
> were able to do it laparoscopically (just 4 small incisions
> for a camera, light, and tools), so she’s in much better
> shape than if they’d cut her open. She didn’t even need to
> stay in the hospital overnight. She’s a bit sore, but
> otherwise none the worse for wear, and she should have most
> of her normal routine back in a few days.

That was all I had energy to do before I crashed. (NyQuil is the devil.)

Diana’s mom had already arranged to stay home and watch her, which is a good thing, because Lenny’s also home from school with a 105-degree fever (same bug I have, probably). Diana’s in no shape to watch him herself, and I can’t really take off work.

I can’t wait until I’m established in this job, and have actual vacation and sick time.

I’ve got an extra warning for the DayQuil packaging…
