July 2007

Diana’s friend is on a diet.  Diana’s on a diet to support her.  I’m on a diet to support Diana.  Let’s keep the chain going - anyone want to keep me company in my misery?  :)

Atkins shakes, light-meat poultry, sugar-free Jello.  Little fat and absolutely no sugar.  It’s actually tolerable food-wise, but I’m finding myself lethargic and a little dizzy in the evenings.  Hopefully that’ll balance out over time.

OK, Zyps 0.1.1 is at last released. Here’s the site…

Why I’m miserable right now…

4gl isn’t catching blatant errors (like number of arguments when opening a cursor) at compile time.  (Hopefully they all get caught before production…)

I have to commit my buggy code into SCCS if I want %C% replaced with line numbers in my error statements.

I have to manually check code back out after each commit, at which point the file is changed, so my editor reloads it. I lose my place each time.

Diana has had the Tivo recording any program with “Egypt” in the title.  I now know more about the pharaohs than anyone who doesn’t live in North Africa should.

On the positive side, the “Comedy - Standup” wishlist is da bomb.

I’m actually starting to get excited about this replay editor they’re including in Halo 3.  From the description I heard on the 1up Yours podcast, I’ll be spending quite a lot of time playing with it.

Now, the question remains: will the damn networking actually work?

Ka-FOOOOM!

Bomberman Live is so %$#@%$@#%$@#%$#@%$#@%$#@%#@ing awesome!  It’s very nice not to have to gather 4+ people and their SNES controllers at one house.

Of course, we’re still plagued by the connection issues we’ve always had on XBox Live games.  At least we confirmed last night that persistence pays off when trying to establish a session.

It would be a lot easier to tolerate working in this spaghetti Informix 4GL code and hand-coded SQL if I was not familiar with Active Record.

Between the baby, work, upcoming surgeries, and everything else, it’ll sometimes take me a whole week to get back to the problems I want to work on.  Not only can I not solve them, I can’t even work on them.  I spend the entire interim with them at the back of my mind.

I’ve always been about instant gratification.  This is really frustrating.

Hmmm…

I’m LGPLing the Zyps code…

What if I made a shareware game out of it for Windows?  I’d broaden my audience, but still compensate myself for the massive pain in the ass that is releasing for Windows.  The code is perfect for doing that target shooting game I sketched out years ago, too…

%$#@ Windows…

I just slashed all the stuff to build a Windows executable and installer from the Zyps rakefile.  It’s now less than half the size.

I’m still going to offer an executable installer, but I’m moving all that cruft out of the main repository.  Linux and Mac users don’t need the pollution.
